Sand
The word “חוֹל” (sand) appears in the Torah, when God promises Abraham: “I will bless you and greatly multiply your offspring like the stars of the heavens and like the sand on the seashore, and your descendants will inherit the gate of their enemies.” (Genesis 22:17)
הַמִּילָּה ח וֹל מוֹפִיעָה בַּתּוֹרָה, כַּאֲשֶׁר אֱלוֹהִים מַבְטִיחַ לְאַבְרָהָם:
"כִּי-בָרֵךְ אֲבָרֶכְךָ וְהַרְבֶּה אַרְבֶּה אֶת-זַרְעֲךָ כְּכוֹכְבֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם וְכַחוֹל אֲשֶׁר עַל-שְׂפַת הַיָּם וְיִרַשׁ זַרְעֲךָ אֶת שַׁעַר אֹיְבָיו" (בְּרֵאשִׁית כב, פָּסוּק יז).
Many people love spending time on the beach, sitting on the sand, and building sandcastles. I love doing that too — and when my kids were little, we did it all the time. The problem is… when we come home, the entire house ends up full of sand, and it takes me a whole week to get rid of the sand!
הַרְבֵּה אֲנָשִׁים אוֹהֲבִים מְאוֹד לָשֶׁבֶת בְּחוֹף הַיָּם, עַל הַחוֹל וְלִבְנוֹת אַרְמוֹנוֹת חוֹל. גַּם אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת זֶה וּכְשֶׁהַיְּלָדִים הָיוּ קְטַנִּים עָשִׂינוּ אֶת זֶה הַרְבֵּה. הַבְּעָיָה הִיא שֶׁכַּאֲשֶׁר חוֹזְרִים הַבַּיְתָה – כּ ָל הַבַּיִת מִתְמַלֵּא בְּחוֹל וְזֶה לוֹקֵחַ לִי שָׁבוּעַ לְהִפָּטֵר מִכָּל הַחוֹל שֶׁהֵבֵאנוּ אִתָּנוּ...
But I don't want to complain too much about sand — it’s incredibly useful for construction. I remember when we were adding in the house — a new room, or a new shower — the builders would mix sand into the concrete, which they used to lay the floor or stick the bricks together.
אֲבָל אֲנִי לֹא רוֹצָה לְהִתְלוֹנֵן כָּל הַזְּמַן עַל חוֹל כִּי חוֹל מְשַׁמֵּשׁ אוֹתָנוּ בִּשְׁבִיל בְּנִיָּה. אֲנִי זוֹכֶרֶת שֶׁכַּאֲשֶׁר בָּנִינוּ בַּבַּיִת כָּל מִינֵי תּוֹסָפוֹת: לְמָשָׁל חֶדֶר חָדָשׁ אוֹ מִקְלַחַת חֲדָשָׁה הַבַּנָּאִים עִרְבְּבוּ חוֹל עִם הַבֶּטוֹן שֶׁבְּאֶמְצָעוּתוֹ בָּנוּ אֶת הָרִצְפָּה אוֹ הִדְבִּיקוּ אֶת הַלְּבֵנִים זוֹ לָזוֹ.
There are also many Hebrew expressions with the word חוֹל (sand), for example:
“To bury one’s head in the sand”
“Hourglass” (literally: sand clock)

יֵשׁ לָנוּ הַרְבֵּה בִּיטּוּיִים בְּעִבְרִית עִם הַמִּילָּה חוֹל, לְמָשָׁל:
"טָמַן רֹאשׁוֹ בַּחוֹל"
"שְׁעוֹן חוֹל"
"זָרָה חוֹל בָּעֵינַיִם"
כָּל הַבִּיטּוּיִים הָאֵלֶּה מוֹפִיעִים בְּאַרְגַּז הַבִּיטּוּיִים בְּנוֹשֵׂא יָם. אִם אַתֶּם רוֹצִים לִלְמוֹד עֲלֵיהֶם נָא לַחֲצוּ כָּאן.
Here are a few sentences with the word sand:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'חוֹל':
1. On a desert hike, they saw huge sand dunes shifting in the wind, forming spectacular shapes.
1. בְּטִיּוּל בַּמִּדְבָּר, הֵם רָאוּ דְּיוּנוֹת חוֹל עֲצוּמוֹת שֶׁהִתְנוֹעֲעוּ בָּרוּחַ וְיָצְרוּ צוּרוֹת מַרְהִיבוֹת.
2. The girl filled a bucket with wet sand to build a tall sandcastle on the shore.
2. הַיַּלְדָּה מִלְּאָה דְּלִי בְּחוֹל רָטוֹב, כְּדֵי לִבְנוֹת אַרְמוֹן חוֹל גָּבוֹהַּ עַל שְׂפַת הַיָּם.
3. Yesterday there was a strong sandstorm, and it left my garden a mess — full of dust and debris.
3. אֶתְמוֹל הָיְתָה סוּפַת חוֹל חֲזָקָה וְהִיא הִשְׁאִירָה אֶת הַגִּינָּה שֶׁלִּי מְבוּלְגֶּנֶת וּמְלוּכְלֶכֶת.
4. The farmer explained that sandy soil doesn’t retain water well, so it’s hard to grow crops in it.
4. הַחַקְלַאי הִסְבִּיר שֶׁאַדְמַת חוֹל אֵינָהּ שׁוֹמֶרֶת מַיִם הֵיטֵב, וְלָכֵן קָשֶׁה לְגַדֵּל בָּהּ צְמָחִים.
