A watermelon – Watermelons
Riddle: What's green on the outside, red on the inside, and has watermelon seeds?
חִידָה: מָה זֶה יָרוֹק מִבַּחוּץ, אָדוֹם מִבִּפְנִים וְיֵשׁ לוֹ גַּרְעִינִים שֶׁל אֲבַטִּיחַ?
The watermelon is mentioned in the Torah only once: "We remember the fish we ate in Egypt for free – the cucumbers and the watermelons…” (Numbers 11:5)
הָאֲבַטִּיחַ מוּזְכָּר בַּתּוֹרָה פַּעַם אַחַת בִּלְבַד: "זָכַרְנוּ אֶת-הַדָּגָה אֲשֶׁר-נֹאכַל בְּמִצְרַיִם חִנָּם; אֶת הַקִּשֻּׁאִים וְאֶת הָאֲבַטִּחִים"(בַּמִּדְבָּר יא, פָּסוּק ה).
Watermelons have black seeds, but there is also a seedless kind with a very thick rind.
לַאֲבַטִּיחַ יֵשׁ גַּרְעִינִים שְׁחוֹרִים.
אֲבָל יֵשׁ גַּם זַן לְלֹא גַּרְעִינִים בִּכְלָל וְיֵשׁ לוֹ קְלִיפָּה עָבָה מְאוֹד.
How can you tell if a watermelon is sweet? You knock on it. If you hear a deep, hollow sound, that means it’s ripe and sweet.
And if it is ripe and sweet – slice it up and serve it with a few cubes of salty cheese. Watermelon with salty cheese is the most delicious…
אֵיךְ יוֹדְעִים אִם הָאֲבַטִּיחַ מָתוֹק?
צָרִיךְ לְהַכּוֹת עָלָיו. אִם שׁוֹמְעִים קוֹל עָמוּם, כְּלוֹמַר כְּאִילּוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ חָלָל רֵיק בִּפְנִים – אָז הוּא בָּשֵׁל וּמָתוֹק.
וְאִם הוּא בָּשֵׁל וּמָתוֹק אָז חִתְכוּ אוֹתוֹ יַחַד עִם כַּמָּה קוּבִּיּוֹת גְּבִינָה מְלוּחָה.
הֲכִי טָעִים אֲבַטִּיחַ עִם גְּבִינָה מְלוּחָה...
