He who was burned by boiling (water) is carful with cold (water)
The phrase "He who was burned by boiling water will be cautious even with cold water" originates from the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud. It is based on the idea that a person who has experienced a difficult event or injury in the past will be cautious even in less dangerous situations in the future, out of fear of repeating the same mistake.
הַבִּיטּוּי "מִי שֶׁנִּכְוָה בְּרוֹתְחִין נִזְהָר בְּצוֹנְנִין" מַגִּיעַ מֵהַתַּלְמוּד הַבָּבְלִי וְהַיְּרוּשַׁלְמִי. הוּא מְבוּסָּס עַל רַעְיוֹן לְפִיו אָדָם שֶׁחָוָה חֲוָיָה קָשָׁה אוֹ פְּגִיעָה בֶּעָבָר נִזְהָר גַּם מִמַּצָּבִים פָּחוֹת מְסוּכָּנִים בֶּעָתִיד, מִתּוֹךְ חֲשָׁשׁ שֶׁיַּחֲזוֹר עַל אוֹתָהּ טָעוּת.
For example: Some people were married once and are not interested in marrying again because they experienced difficulties in their first marriage and do not want to relive those experiences. Even if they are not sure that they would face the same hardships with a new partner, they are not willing to take the risk.
לְמָשָׁל: יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁהָיוּ נְשׂוּאִים פַּעַם אַחַת וְלֹא מְעוּנְיָנִים לְהִנָּשֵׂא פַּעַם נוֹסֶפֶת כִּי הֵם חָווּ חֲוָיוֹת קָשׁוֹת בַּנִּישּׂוּאִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים וְהֵם לֹא רוֹצִים לַחֲווֹת אֶת הַחֲוָיוֹת הָאֵלֶּה שׁוּב. אֲפִילּוּ אִם הֵם לֹא בְּטוּחִים שֶׁהֵם יֶחְווּ אֶת אוֹתָן הַחֲוָיוֹת הַקָּשׁוֹת עִם בֶּן זוּג חָדָשׁ, הֵם לֹא מוּכָנִים לָקַחַת אֶת הַסִּיכּוּן.
There are also people who have been in a serious car accident and stop driving altogether. They have completely lost their self-confidence and refuse to use a car again out of fear that another accident might happen.
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁעָבְרוּ תְּאוּנָה קָשָׁה עִם הָרֶכֶב וְהֵם מַפְסִיקִים לִנְהוֹג. הֵם אִבְּדוּ אֶת הַבִּטָּחוֹן הָעַצְמִי שֶׁלָּהֶם לְגַמְרֵי וְהֵם לֹא מוּכָנִים לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בָּרֶכֶב שׁוּב מֵחֲשָׁשׁ שֶׁתִּקְרֶה לָהֶם תְּאוּנָה שׁוּב.
The phrase can also be used in financial matters—some people have invested money and lost it, and they are unwilling to invest again because they fear losing money once more.
גַּם בְּעִנְיְנֵי כֶּסֶף אֶפְשָׁר לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה. יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁהִשְׁקִיעוּ כֶּסֶף וְהִפְסִידוּ אוֹתוֹ, הֵם לֹא מוּכָנִים לְהַשְׁקִיעַ שׁוּב כִּי הֵם פּוֹחֲדִים לְהַפְסִיד שׁוּב.
