A table - Tables
The word shulchan(table) already appears in the Bible: “And you shall make a table of acacia wood: two cubits long, one cubit wide, and one and a half cubits high.” (Exodus 25:23).
הַמִּילָּה שׁוּלְחָן מוֹפִיעָה כְּבָר בַּתּנ"ךְ:
"וְעָשִׂיתָ שֻׁלְחָן עֲצֵי שִׁטִּים אַמָּתַיִם אָרְכּוֹ וְאַמָּה רָחְבּוֹ וְאַמָּה וָחֵצִי קֹמָתוֹ".(שְׁמוֹת כה, פָּסוּק כג)
In Hebrew, we have:
Shulchan ochel – a dining table, used for meals
Shulchan ktiva – a writing desk, used for work or by students
Shulchan tenis – a ping-pong table, used for playing
And also Shulchan Aruch – a foundational book of Jewish law
בְּעִבְרִית יֵשׁ לָנוּ:
שׁוּלְחָן אוֹכֶל – שֶׁמְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לַאֲרוּחוֹת.
שׁוּלְחָן כְּתִיבָה – שֶׁמְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לַעֲבוֹדָה אוֹ לְתַלְמִידִים.
וְיֵשׁ לָנוּ גַּם שׁוּלְחָן טֶנִיס הַמְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לְמִשְׂחָק.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ גַּם אֶת 'שׁוּלְחָן עָרוּךְ' שֶׁהוּא סֵפֶר הֲלָכוֹת יְהוּדִי.
The plural of shulchan is shulchanot, even though the word is masculine. This can be confusing, since one might think the word is feminine or that the plural should be shulchanim. But there are other masculine nouns with feminine-sounding plurals, such as avot (fathers), arayot(lions), and ḥalonot (windows).
הָרִיבּוּי שֶׁל הַמִּילָּה שׁוּלְחָן הוּא שׁוּלְחָנוֹת וְזֹאת לַמְרוֹת שֶׁהַמִּילָּה הִיא בְּזָכָר. זֶה אָמְנָם מְבַלְבֵּל מְאוֹד כִּי אֶפְשָׁר לַחֲשׁוֹב שֶׁהַמִּילָּה הִיא בִּנְקֵבָה אוֹ שֶׁהָרִיבּוּי שֶׁלָּהּ הוּא שׁוּלְחָנִים, אֲבָל יֵשׁ לָנוּ עוֹד כַּמָּה דּוּגְמָאוֹת כָּאֵלֶּה, לְמָשָׁל: אָבוֹת, אֲרָיוֹת, חַלּוֹנוֹת – כּוּלָּם שְׁמוֹת עֶצֶם בְּזָכָר.
In Hebrew, we have the beautiful expression: “Liftoach shulchan” – to open a table.

הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מוֹפִיעַ בְּאַרְגַּז הַבִּיטּוּיִים בְּנוֹשֵׂא רָהִיטִים וְאִם אַתֶּם רוֹצִים לִלְמוֹד עָלָיו נָא לַחֲצוּ כָּאן.
Here are a few sentences with the word shulchan (table):
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'שׁוּלְחָן':
1. Every Friday evening, we set a festive table: we spread a white tablecloth and place plates, glasses, and cutlery that we use only on Shabbat.
1. בְּכָל עֶרֶב שַׁבָּת אֲנַחְנוּ עוֹרְכִים שׁוּלְחָן חֲגִיגִי: פּוֹרְשִׂים מַפָּה לְבָנָה וְעָלֶיהָ מַנִּיחִים צַלָּחוֹת, כּוֹסוֹת וְסַכּוּ"ם שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בּוֺ רַק בְּשַׁבָּת.
2. After the Shabbat meal, we place all kinds of snacks and treats on the low table in the living room and sit down to watch a movie.
2. אַחֲרֵי אֲרוּחַת הַשַּׁבָּת אֲנַחְנוּ מְנִיחִים עַל הַשּׁוּלְחָן הַנָּמוּךְ בַּסָּלוֹן כָּל מִינֵי חֲטִיפִים וְנ ִשְׁנוּשִׁים וְיוֹשְׁבִים לִצְפּוֹת בְּסֶרֶט.
3. In the center of the conference room stood a dark elliptical table, around which the critical discussions about the company’s future took place.
3. בְּמֶרְכַּז חֲדַר הַיְּשִׁיבוֹת עָמַד שׁוּלְחָן אֵלִיפְּטִי כֵּהֶה, שֶׁסְּבִיבוֹ הִתְנַהֲלוּ הַדִּיּוּנִים הַגּוֹרָלִיִּים עַל עֲתִיד הַחֶבְרָה.
4. On our balcony, we have a large plastic table, and in the summer we barbecue and eat outside.
4. יֵשׁ לָנוּ בַּמִּרְפֶּסֶת שׁוּלְחָן גָּדוֹל מִפְּלַסְטִיק וּבַקַּיִץ אֲנַחְנוּ עוֹשִׂים "עַל הָאֵשׁ" וְאוֹכְלִים בַּחוּץ.
