A sofa - Sofas

The word sapa(sofa) appears in the Bible: “Beds, basins, pottery, wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils, and roasted grain.” (2 Samuel 17:28)

However, in that verse, the meaning of the word sapa was not what we use it for today. In that context, sapa referred to a type of vessel used for eating or food preparation—like a bowl or tray.

הַמִּילָּה 'סַפָּה' מוֹפִיעָה בַּתּנ"ךְ:

"מִשְׁכָּב וְסַפּוֹת וּכְלִי יוֹצֵר וְחִטִּים וּשְׂעֹרִים וְקֶמַח וְקָלִי וּפוֹל וַעֲדָשִׁים וְקָלִי" (שְׁמוּאֵל ב' יז, פָּסוּק כח), אֲבָל לֹא בַּמַּשְׁמָעוּת שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בָּהּ בַּתְּקוּפָה הַמּוֹדֶרְנִית.

בַּפָּסוּק הַזֶּה מַשְׁמָעוּת הַמִּילָּה 'סַפָּה' הָיְתָה כְּלִי כָּלְשֶׁהוּא שֶׁיְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לַאֲכִילָה אוֹ לַהֲכָנַת אוֹכֶל כְּמוֹ קְעָרָה אוֹ מַגָּשׁ.

Over time, the meaning of the word changed, likely under the influence of the English word sofa, due to the similarity in sound.

בְּמַהֲלַךְ הַשָּׁנִים הַמִּילָּה הַזֹּאת שִׁנְּתָה אֶת מַשְׁמָעוּתָהּ כַּנִּרְאֶה בְּהַשְׁפָּעַת הַמִּלָּה Sofa הָאַנְגְּלִית וּבִגְלַל הַדִּמְיוֹן בַּצְּלִיל.

So, in modern usage, a sapa is a comfortable, upholstered seat designed for several people to sit on together. There are two-seater sofas, which comfortably seat two people, and three-seater sofas.

אָז בַּמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַמּוֹדֶרְנִית הַסַּפָּה הִיא מוֹשָׁב נוֹחַ וּמְרוּפָּד שֶׁמְּיוּעָד לִישִׁיבָה שֶׁל כַּמָּה אֲנָשִׁים יַחַד.

יֵשׁ סַפָּה דוּ מוֹשָׁבִית שֶׁיֵּשׁ בָּה מָקוֹם לִישִׁיבָה נוֹחָה שֶׁל שְׁנֵי אֲנָשִׁים וְיֵשׁ סַפָּה תְּלַת מוֹשָׁבִית.

Typically, a sofa has padded, soft armrests at both ends. You can rest your arms on them—or even use them as a pillow if you want to lie down on the sofa and watch TV.

בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל לַסַּפָּה יֵשׁ בִּשְׁנֵי הַקְּצָווֹת שֶׁלָּהּ יָדִיּוֹת מְרוּפָּדוֹת וּנְעִימוֹת לְמַגָּע. אֶפְשָׁר לָשִׂים עַל הַיָּדִיּוֹת הָאֵלֶּה אֶת הַיָּדַיִם וַאֲפִילּוּ לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בָּהֶן בְּתוֹר כָּרִית אִם רוֹצִים לִשְׁכַּב עַל הַסַּפָּה וְלִצְפּוֹת בַּטֶּלֶוִיזְיָה.

1. At the furniture store, we debated between a modern two-seater sofa and a velvet-upholstered chaise lounge.

2. הָיְתָה לָהֶם מְרִיבָה קָשָׁה בָּעֶרֶב וְהִיא אָמְרָה לוֹ: "אַתָּה הוֹלֵךְ לִישׁוֹן עַל הַסַּפָּה הַיּוֹם!"

3. The sofa in the hotel lobby looked luxurious, but it was so uncomfortable.

3. הַסַּפָּה שֶׁעָמְדָה בַּלּוֹבִּי שֶׁל הַמָּלוֹן נִרְאֲתָה יוֹקְרָתִית, אֲבָל הָיְתָה כָּל כָּךְ לֹא נוֹחָה.

4. When we moved apartments, we discovered that the old sofa wouldn’t fit through the door, so we had to bring it in through the back window of the living room.

4. כְּשֶׁעָבַרְנוּ דִּירָה, גִּלִּינוּ שֶׁהַסַּפָּה הַיְּשָׁנָה לֹא נִכְנֶסֶת דֶּרֶךְ הַדֶּלֶת אָז נֶאֱלַצְנוּ לְהַכְנִיס אוֹתָהּ דֶּרֶךְ הַחַלּוֹן הָאֲחוֹרִי שֶׁל הַסָּלוֹן.
