A shelf – shelves
A shelf isn’t exactly a piece of furniture, but shelves are an inseparable part of the items we use at home for many different purposes. One of the first things we do when moving into a new apartment—after all the large furniture has arrived—is to hang shelves.
הַמַּדָּף הוּא לֹא בְּדִיּוּק רָהִיט, אֲבָל מַדָּפִים הֵם חֵלֶק בִּלְתִּי נִפְרָד מֵהַפְּרִיטִים שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בָּהֶם בַּבַּיִת לְשִׁימּוּשִׁים רַבִּים וְשׁוֹנִים. אַחַד הַדְּבָרִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ עוֹשִׂים כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ נִכְנָסִים לְדִירָה חֲדָשָׁה, אַחֲרֵי הַגָּעַת כָּל הָרָהִיטִים הַגְּדוֹלִים הוּא לִתְלוֹת מַדָּפִים.
We hang shelves on the walls, and with them we decorate the home by placing small sculptures or decorative items on them.
אֲנַחְנוּ תּוֹלִים מַדָּפִים עַל הַקִּירוֹת וְאִיתָּם אֲנַחְנוּ מְקַשְּׁטִים אֶת הַבַּיִת אִם אֲנַחְנוּ שָׂמִים עֲלֵיהֶם פִּסְלוֹנִים יָפִים אוֹ דִּבְרֵי נוֹי.
Our books sit on shelves. I have a built-in book niche at home, meaning the shelves aren’t placed on the wall but are actually part of the wall’s structure.
הַסְּפָרִים שֶׁלָּנוּ יוֹשְׁבִים עַל מַדָּפִים. יֵשׁ לִי בַּבַּיִת נִישָׁה שֶׁל סְפָרִים שֶׁהִיא קְבוּעָה בַּקִּיר, כְּלוֹמַר הַמַּדָּפִים אֵינָם תְּלוּיִים עַל הַקִּיר אֶלָּא הַקִּיר בָּנוּי כָּךְ.
Inside wardrobes, we organize our clothes on shelves. In kitchen cabinets, we arrange plates and cups on shelves, and in the bathroom cabinet, towels are neatly stacked on shelves.
בְּתוֹךְ אֲרוֹנוֹת הַבְּגָדִים אֲנַחְנוּ מְסַדְּרִים אֶת הַבְּגָדִים עַל הַמַּדָּפִים.
בַּאֲרוֹנוֹת הַמִּטְבָּח אֲנַחְנוּ מְסַדְּרִים אֶת הַצָלָחוֹת וְהַכּוֹסוֹת עַל מַדָּפִים וּבַאֲרוֹן הָאַמְבַּטְיָה הַמַּגָּבוֹת מְסוּדָּרוֹת עַל מַדָּפִים.
