We have a clothes closet – used for storing clothes, and it always needs to be tidied up because it’s always messy...
Some people don’t have a regular closet but instead have a walk-in closet. That’s a room with shelves along the walls where we organize our clothes. It’s very convenient.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֲרוֹן בְּגָדִים – שֶׁמְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לְאִחְסוּן בְּגָדִים וְתָמִיד צָרִיךְ לְסַדֵּר אוֹתוֹ כִּי הוּא תָּמִיד מְבוּלְגָּן...
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁבִּמְקוֹם אֲרוֹן בְּגָדִים יֵשׁ לָהֶם חֲדַר אֲרוֹנוֹת. זֶה חֶדֶר שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ מַדָּפִים עַל הַקִּירוֹת וְעַל הַמַּדָּפִים אֲנַחְנוּ מְסַדְּרִים אֶת הַבְּגָדִים. זֶה מַמָּשׁ נוֹחַ.
A kitchen cabinet – used for storing plates, cups, pots, and dry food like rice, pasta, and canned goods. Some kitchens have cabinets on both the upper and lower parts of the walls.
אֲרוֹן מִטְבָּח – שֶׁמְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לְאִחְסוּן שֶׁל צַלָּחוֹת, כּוֹסוֹת, סִירִים וְגַם מָזוֹן יָבֵשׁ כְּמוֹ אוֹרֶז, פַּסְטָה וְקוּפְסָאוֹת שִׁימּוּרִים.
יֵשׁ מִטְבָּחִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ בָּהֶם אֲרוֹנוֹת גַּם בַּחֵלֶק הָעֶלְיוֹן וְגַם בַּחֵלֶק הַתַּחְתּוֹן.
An electrical or communications cabinet – usually located in the stairwell or outside the house, and it contains all the home’s electrical connections or internet cables.
אֲרוֹן חַשְׁמַל\תִּקְשׁוֹרֶת – הוּא נִּמְצָא בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל בַּחֲדַר הַמַּדְרֵגוֹת אוֹ מִחוּץ לַבַּיִת וּמֵכִיל אֶת כָּל חִיבּוּרֵי הַחַשְׁמַל שֶׁל הַבַּיִת אוֹ הַחוּטִים שֶׁל הָאִינְטֶרְנֵט.
The Holy Ark (Aron HaKodesh) – this is where the Torah scroll is kept in every synagogue. On Mondays, Thursdays, and Shabbat, when we read from the Torah, we open the ark and take out the scroll.
אֲרוֹן הַקּוֹדֶשׁ – שָׁם נִמְצָא סֵפֶר הַתּוֹרָה בְּכָל בֵּית כְּנֶסֶת. בְּיָמִים שֵׁנִי, חֲמִישִׁי וְשַׁבָּת כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ קוֹרְאִים בַּתּוֹרָה, אֲנַחְנוּ פּוֹתְחִים אֶת אֲרוֹן הַקּוֹדֶשׁ וּמוֹצִיאִים אֶת סֵפֶר הַתּוֹרָה.
We also have a utility cabinet, where we keep all kinds of items needed for household maintenance, such as a broom, mop, cleaning supplies, and cloths. Some people also store a vacuum cleaner and an iron in the utility cabinet.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֲרוֹן שֵׁירוּת שֶׁבּוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ שָׂמִים כָּל מִינֵי דְּבָרִים שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים בִּשְׁבִיל תַּחְזוּקַת הַבַּיִת, לְמָשָׁל: מַטְאֲטֵא, מַגַּב, חוֹמְרֵי נִיקּוּי, מַטְלִיּוֹת. יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁשָּׂמִים בַּאֲרוֹן הַשֵּׁירוּת גַּם שׁוֹאֵב אָבָק וּמְגַהֵץ.
There’s the expression Aron Sfarim. This can refer to a physical cabinet where we store books, but it’s also an expression that refers to a body of literature in a specific field. For example, “the Jewish Aron Sfarim” refers to all the books written in the field of Judaism, including halacha (Jewish law), commentaries, and midrashim.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֶת הַבִּיטּוּי "אֲרוֹן סְפָרִים". אֲרוֹן הַסְּפָרִים יָכוֹל לִהְיוֹת אָרוֹן פִיזִי שֶׁבּוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ מְאַחְסְנִים סְפָרִים, אֲבָל זֶהוּ, לְמַעֲשֶׂה, גַּם בִּיטּוּי שֶׁמְּדַבֵּר עַל סְפָרִים מִתְּחוּם מְסוּיָּם, לְמָשָׁל: "אֲרוֹן הַסְּפָרִים הַיְּהוּדִי" הוּא בִּיטּוּי שֶׁכּוֹלֵל אֶת כָּל הַסְּפָרִים שֶׁנִּכְתְּבוּ בִּתְחוּם הַיַּהֲדוּת וְכוֹלֵל הֲלָכוֹת, פַּרְשָׁנוּיוֹת וּמִדְרָשִׁים.
We have a shoe cabinet – usually a low cabinet with doors that open sideways, making it easy and convenient to take out shoes.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֲרוֹן נַעֲלַיִם. זֶה בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל אָרוֹן נָמוּךְ וְהַדְּלָתוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ נִפְתָּחוֹת עַל צִירִים לָרוֹחַב, כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה נוֹחַ וְקַל לִשְׁלוֹף אֶת הַנַּעֲלַיִם.
In the bathroom cabinet, we store all the items we use in the bathroom, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, shaving tools, and of course, towels.
בַּאֲרוֹן הָאַמְבַּטְיָה אֲנַחְנוּ שָׂמִים אֶת כָּל הָחוֹמָרִים שֶׁבָּהֶם אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּחֲדַר הָאַמְבַּטְיָה לְמָשָׁל: מִבְרֶשֶׁת שִׁינַּיִם וּמִשְׁחַת שִׁינַּיִם, שַׁמְפּוֹ, כְּלֵי גִּילּוּחַ וְכַמּוּבָן גַּם מַגָּבוֹת.
And in Hebrew, we also have the expressions:
