A kettle - Kettles
The kettle is an electric appliance found in the kitchen, used to boil water. Sometimes we add the word “electric” and say electric kettle, which we use to boil water using electricity when we want coffee or tea.
הַקּוּמְקוּם הוּא מוּצָ ר חַשְׁמַלִּי שֶׁנִּמְצָא בַּמִּטְבָּח ומְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לְהַרְתָּחַת מַיִם.
לִפְעָמִים אֲנַחְנוּ מוֹסִיפִים אֶת הַמִּילָּה חַשְׁמַלִּי וְאָז אוֹמְרִים 'קוּמְקוּם חַשְׁמַלִּי' וּבוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ מַרְתִּיחִים מַיִם בְּאֶמְצָעוּת חַשְׁמַל כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים קָפֶה אוֹ תֵּה.
The origin of the Hebrew word kumkum comes from Rabbinic Hebrew, which borrowed it from Latin. In Latin, the word means “bowl” or “pot.”
מְקוֹר הַמִּילָּה קוּמְקוּם הוּא מִלְּשׁוֹן חז"ל (חֲכָמֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה) שֶׁהִשְׁאִילוּ אוֹתָהּ מִלָּטִינִית. בְּלָטִינִית פֵּירוּשׁ הַמִּילָּה הוּא קְעָרָה אוֹ סִיר.
Old-fashioned kettles had a whistle, and when the water boiled, the whistle would sound.
בְּקוּמְקוּמִים יְשָׁנִים הָיְתָה מַשְׁרוֹקִית וּכְשֶׁהַמַּים הָיוּ רוֹתְחִים הַמַּשְׁרוֹקִית הָיְתָה שׁוֹרֶקֶת.
In Hebrew, we have the expression: “Don’t rattle the kettle” (al t’kashkesh ba’kumkum). This is used to tell someone they’re talking nonsense or saying unclear things.
בְּעִבְרִית יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֶת הַבִּיטּוּי: "אַל תְּקַשְׁקֵשׁ בַּקּוּמְקוּם". אֲנִי מִשְׁתַּמֶּשֶׁת בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁאֲנִי רוֹצָה לְהַגִּיד לְמִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁהוּא מְדַבֵּר שְׁטוּיוֹת אוֹ דְּבָרִים לֹא בְּרוּרִים.
Here are a few sentences with the word kumkum (kettle):
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'קוּמְקוּם':
1. In the winter, I love making hot tea with mint, so I boil water in the kettle, pick fresh mint from the windowsill planter, and pour the water over the tea bag and mint leaves.
1. בִּימוֹת הַחוֹרֶף אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת לְהָכִין תֵּה חַם עִם נַעֲנַע אָז אֲנִי מַרְתִּיחָה מַיִם בַּקּוּמְקוּם, קוֹטֶפֶת נַעֲנַע מֵהָאֲדָנִית שֶׁלְּיַד הַחַלּוֹן וְשׁוֹפֶכֶת אֶת הַמַּיִם עַל הַתִּיוֹן וְעַל עֲלֵי הַנַּעֲנַע.
2. When there’s a power outage and the kettle doesn’t work, I'm forced to boil water the old-fashioned way. I put a small pot with water on the stove and boil it over a flame.
2. כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ הַפְסָקַת חַשְׁמַל וְהַקּוּמְקוּם לֹא עוֹבֵד, אֲנִי נֶאֱלֶצֶת לְהַרְתִּיחַ מַיִם בַּדֶּרֶךְ הַיְּשָׁנָה. אֲנִי שָׂמָה סִיר קָטָן עִם מַיִם עַל הַכִּירַיִם וּמַרְתִּיחָה אוֹתָם בְּעֶזְרַת אֵשׁ.
3. When I make rice, I boil water in the kettle because the rice turns out better when it’s cooked with boiling water.
3. כְּשֶׁאֲנִי מְכִינָה אוֹרֶז אֲנִי מַרְתִּיחָה מַיִם בַּקּוּמְקוּם כִּי הָאוֹרֶז יוֹצֵא טוֹב יוֹתֵר אִם מְכִינִים אוֹתוֹ בְּעֶזְרַת מַיִם רוֹתְחִים.
4. From time to time, I clean the kettle with vinegar to remove limescale. I pour vinegar into the kettle and leave it for at least half an hour. Then I boil water in the kettle and pour it out.
4. מִדֵּי פַּעַם אֲנִי מְנַקָּה אֶת הַקּוּמְקוּם בְּעֶזְרַת חוֹמֶץ כְּדֵי לְהָסִיר אֶת הָאַבְנִית. אֲנִי שׁוֹפֶכֶת חוֹמֶץ לְתוֹךְ הַקּוּמְקוּם וּמַשְׁאִירָה אוֹתוֹ לְפָחוֹת חֲצִי שָׁעָה. אַחַר כָּךְ אֲנִי מַרְתִּיחָה מַיִם בַּקּוּמְקוּם וְשׁוֹפֶכֶת אוֹתָם.
