A penny is judged like a hundred
The expression “the law of a penny is like the law of a hundred” appears in the Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Sanhedrin, and its meaning is that a judge must treat every case — whether small or large — with the same level of seriousness, integrity, and precision.
One must not dismiss a small claim just because it “isn’t worth much money.”
הַבִּיטּוּי "דִּין פְּרוּטָה כְּדִין מֵאָה" מוֹפִיעַ בְּמַסֶּכֶת סַנְהֶדְרִין בַּתַּלְמוּד הַבָּבְלִי וּמַשְׁמָעוּתוֹ הִיא שֶׁשּׁוֹפֵט צָרִיךְ לִשְׁפּוֹט כָּל מִקְרֶה — קָטָן כְּגָדוֹל — בְּאוֹתָהּ מִידָּה שֶׁל רְצִינוּת, יוֹשֶׁר וְדַקְדְּקָנוּת. אָסוּר לְהִתְיַחֵס בְּזִלְזוּל לִתְבִיעָה קְטַנָּה רַק כִּי הִיא "לֹא שָׁוָה הַרְבֵּה כֶּסֶף".
This expression conveys a profound moral and philosophical message: equality before the law. There is no difference between a wealthy person suing for a large sum and a poor person suing for a small amount.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לְהַעֲבִיר לָנוּ מֶסֶר רַעֲיוֹנִי מוּסָרִי עָמוֹק: שִׁוְיוֹן בִּפְנֵי הַחוֹק.
אֵין הֶבְדֵּל בֵּין אָדָם עָשִׁיר שֶׁתּוֹבֵעַ עַל סְכוּם גָּדוֹל לְבֵין אָדָם עָנִי שֶׁתּוֹבֵעַ עַל סְכוּם קָטָן.
But this isn’t just a moral principle — it also carries an important educational message: We must not belittle “small transgressions,” because they reflect a character that may need correction, and beyond that, small wrongdoings can grow into major ones.
לֹא רַק רַעֲיוֹן מוּסָרִי יֵשׁ כָּאן, אֶלָּא גַּם מֶסֶר חִינּוּכִי חָשׁוּב מְאוֹד.
אָסוּר לְזַלְזֵל בַּ"עֲבֵירוֹת קְטַנּוֹת" כִּי הֵן מְעִידוֹת עַל אוֹפִי שֶׁצָּרִיךְ שִׁינּוּי וּמֵעֵבֶר לְכָךְ "עֲבֵירוֹת קְטַנּוֹת" יְכוֹלוֹת לִגְדּוֹל וְלַהֲפוֹךְ לַעֲבֵירוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת".
Let’s consider, for example, a child who takes a candy without permission.
Some people might say: “Oh, it’s just a candy, no big deal.” But this expression teaches us that it’s important to teach the child principles of permission, respect, and boundaries — even in small matters.
And more than that, it’s important to do this while the child is still young and the issue is still small. If we insist on these values now, the child will grow up with a healthy personality and strong moral values.
בּוֹאוּ נַחֲשׁוֹב לְמָשָׁל עַל יֶלֶד שֶׁלּוֹקֵחַ מַמְתָּק בְּלִי רְשׁוּת.
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁיַּגִּידוּ: "נוּ, זֶה רַק מַמְתָּק, לֹא צָרִיךְ לַעֲשׂוֹת מִזֶּה עִנְיָן".
אֲבָל הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מְנַסֶּה לְלַמֵּד אוֹתָנוּ שֶׁחָשׁוּב לְלַמֵּד אֶת הַיֶּלֶד עֶקְרוֹנוֹת שֶׁל רְשׁוּת, כָּבוֹד וּגְבוּלוֹת גַּם בִּדְבָרִים קְטַנִּים.
וְיוֹתֵר מִזֶּה חָשׁוּב לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת זֶה כְּשֶׁהַיְּלָדִים קְטַנִּים וּכְשֶׁהָעִנְיָן הוּא קָטָן.
אִם נִתְעַקֵּשׁ עַל זֶה עַכְשָׁיו, הַיֶּלֶד יִגְדַּל עִם אִישִׁיּוּת בְּרִיאָה וַעֲרָכִים טוֹבִים.
