The noun עַגְבָנִיָּה originates from the root ע.ג.ב, which means courtship, making love, and passion.
מְקוֹר הַשֵּׁם עַגְבָנִיָּה בַּשׁוֹרֶשׁ ע-ג-ב שֶׁמַּשְׁמָעוּתוֹ חִיזּוּר, הִתְעַלְּסוּת וּתְשׁוּקָה.
The name was given to it by Rabbi Yehiel Michael Pines, a Zionist writer, because in Europe it was called "love apple." Rabbi Kook objected to the name because of the sexual connotation and suggested calling it אַדְמוֹנִיָּה.
הָשֵׁם נִיתָּן לָהּ עַל יְדֵי הָרַב יְחִיאֵל מִיכְל פִּינֶס, סוֹפֵר צִיּוֹנִי, בִּגְלַל שֶׁבְּאֵירוֹפָּה קָרְאוּ לָהּ "תַּפּוּחַ אַהֲבָה". הָרַב קוּק הִתְנַגֵּד לַשֵׁם בִּגְלַל הָרֶמֶז הַמִּינִי וְהִצִּיעַ לִקְרוֹא לָהּ אַדְמוֹנִיָּה.
Eliezer Ben-Yehuda proposed the name "Badoura", a Hebrew form of the Arabic word "Bandura", which is close to the Italian word Pomodoro.
אֱלִיעֶזֶר בֶּן-יְהוּדָה הִצִּיעַ אֶת הָשֵׁם "בַּדוּרָה", צוּרָה עִבְרִ ית לַמִּילָּה הָעַרְבִית "בַּנְדוּרָה", שֶׁקְּרוֹבָה לַמִּילָּה Pomodoro מֵהַשָּׂפָה הָאִיטַלְקִית.
However, as we know today, we call it עַגְבָנִיָּה and this is because of the later immigrants from Europe who did not have any problem with the word and the sexual connotation.
אֲבָל, כְּפִי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים הַיּוֹם אֲנַחְנוּ קוֹרְאִים לָהּ עַגְבָנִיָּה וְזֶה בִּגְלַל הָעֲלִיּוֹת הַמְּאוּחָרוֹת יוֹתֵר מֵאֵירוֹפָּה שֶׁלֹּא הָיְתָה לָהֶם שׁוּם בְּעָיָה עִם הַמִּילָּה וְעִם הָרְמָזִים הַמִּינִיִּים.
