Coat - Coats

The coat was one of the priestly garments worn by the high priest in the Temple.
הַמְּעִיל הָיָה אֶחָד מִבִּגְדֵי הַכְּהוּנָּה אוֹתָם לָבַשׁ הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל בְּבֵית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ.
The coat is also used in the Bible as an important garment worn by kings, princes, and other important people.
הַמְּעִיל מוֹפִיעַ בַּמִּקְרָא גַם כְּבֶגֶד חָשׁוּב שֶׁלָּבְשׁוּ אוֹתוֹ מְלָכִים, נְסִיכִים וַאֲנָשִׁים חֲשׁוּבִים נוֹסָפִים.
It is narrated about the prophet Samuel that his mother would make him a coat every year: "And his mother would make him a little coat, and she would bought it to him every year, when she came with her husband, for a sacrifice, the sacrifice of the feast." (1 Samuel 2:19)
עַל שְׁמוּאֵל הַנָּבִיא מְסוּפַּר שֶׁאִמּוֹ הָיְתָה עוֹשָׂה לוֹ מְעִיל כָּל שָׁנָה: " וּמְעִיל קָטֹן תַּעֲשֶׂה-לּוֹ אִמּוֹ, וְהַעַלְתָה לוֹ מִיָּמִים יָמִימָה--בַּעֲלוֹתָהּ, אֶת-אִישָׁהּ, לִזְבֹּחַ, אֶת-זֶבַח הַיָּמִים." (שְׁמוּאֵל א' פֶּרֶק ב' פָּסוּק י"ט),
In modern Hebrew we use the word "coat" to refer to warm garment that we wear over our clothes when we go out into the cold air.
בָּעִבְרִית הַמּוֹדֶרְנִית אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּמִּילָּה מְעִיל כְּדֵי לְצַיֵּן בֶּגֶד חַם שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ לוֹבְשִׁים עַל הַבְּגָדִים כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ יוֹצְאִים מִן הַבַּיִת אֶל מֶזֶג הָאֲוִיר הַקַּר.
Here are some sentences with the word coat:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה מְעִיל:
(1) I have a raincoat. It is made of nylon. If I walk in the rain with it on, it gets wet, but I don't.
(1) יֵשׁ לִי מְעִיל גֶּשֶׁם. הוּא עָשׂוּי מִנַּיְלוֹן. אִם אֲנִי הוֹלֶכֶת אִיתּוֹ בַּגֶּשֶׁם הוּא נִרְטַב אֲבָל אֲנִי לֹא.
(2) I also have a fashionable coat made of fabric, but when I walk in the rain it gets wet, and so do I.
(2) יֵשׁ לִי גַּם מְעִיל אוֹפְנָתִי מִבַּד, אֲבָל כְּשֶׁאֲנִי הוֹלֶכֶת בַּגֶּשֶׁם גַּם הוּא נִרְטָב וְגַם אֲנִי.
(3) Which coat do you prefer? A fur coat or a leather coat?
(3) אֵיזֶה מְעִיל אַתֶּם מַעֲדִיפִים? מְעִיל פַּרְוָה אוֹ מְעִיל עוֹר?
(4) I have a heavy winter coat, and when I put it on, I feel uncomfortable.
(4) יֵשׁ לִי מְעִיל חוֹרֶף כָּבֵד וּכְשֶׁאֲנִי עוֹטֶה אוֹתוֹ אֲנִי מַרְגִּישׁ מְסוּרְבָּל.
