To fasten
We use the verb 'לַחֲגוֹר' when we intend to put on a belt in our pants.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לַחֲגוֹר כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּוְּנִים לָשִׂים חֲגוֹרָה בַּמִּכְנָסַיִם.
So, we can put on a belt in our pants, but we can also fasten the belt in a car.
אָז אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לַחֲגוֹר חֲגוֹרָה בַּמִּכְנָסַיִם, אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לַחֲגוֹר גַּם אֶת הַחֲגוֹרָה בָּאוֹטוֹ.
If the belt is loose, i.e it is too big, we must tighten it, i.e. to make it smaller, but if it is too small and too tight, we must loosen it.
אִם הַחֲגוֹרָה מְשׁוּחְרֶרֶת, כְּלוֹמַר גְּדוֹלָה מִדַּי אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לְהַדֵּק אוֹתָהּ, כְּלוֹמַר לַעֲשׂוֹת אוֹתָהּ קְטַנָּה יוֹתֵר, אֲבָל אִם הִיא קְטַנָּה מִדַּי וְלוֹחֶצֶת אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים קְצָת לְשַׁחְרֵר.
When you get into a car, everyone is required to fasten a seat belt, but not the belt in our pants, but the car seat belt. This can save lives, God forbid, in case of an accident.
כַּאֲשֶׁר נִכְנָסִים לָאוֹטוֹ כּוּלָּם חַיָּבִים לַחֲגוֹר חֲגוֹרָה, אֲבָל לֹא אֶת הַחֲגוֹרָה בַּמִּכְנָסַיִם אֶלָּא אֶת הַחֲגוֹרָה שֶׁל הָאוֹטוֹ. זֶה יָכוֹל לְהַצִּיל חַיִּים, חָלִילָה, בְּמִקְרֶה שֶׁל תְּאוּנָה.
Here are some sentences with the verb 'לַחֲגּוֹר' in different tenses and in different pronouns:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַפֹּעַל 'לַחֲגּוֹר' בִּזְמַנִּים שׁוֹנִים וּבְגוּפִים שׁוֹנִים:
1. He put on a belt because his pants are wide and about to fall.
1. הוּא חָגַר חֲגוֹרָה כִּי הַמִּכְנָסַיִם שֶׁלּוֹ רְחָבִים וְעוֹמְדִים לִיפּוֹל.
2. The passengers were asked to fasten their seat belts as the plane began to land.
2. הַנּוֹסְעִים הִתְבַּקְּשׁוּ לַחֲגּוֹר אֶת חֲגוֹרוֹת הַבְּטִיחוּת כַּאֲשֶׁר הַמָּטוֹס הֵחֵל לִנְחוֹת.
3. Before boarding the boat, I fastened my safety belt.
3. לִפְנֵי הָעֲלִיָּה לַסִּירָה חָגַרְתִּי אֶת חֲגוֹרַת הַהַצָּלָה.
4. Transportation regulations require students to fasten safely belts on the bus, but few do so.
4. תַּקָּנוֹת הַהַסָּעָה מְחַיְּבוֹת אֶת הַתַּלְמִידִים לַחֲגּוֹר חֲגוֹרוֹת בְּטִיחוּת בָּאוֹטוֹבּוּס, אֲבָל מְעַטִּים עוֹשִׂים זֹאת.
