To button up
We use the verb 'לְכַפְתֵּר' when we want to close buttons.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְכַפְתֵּר כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לִסְגּוֹר כַּפְתּוֹרִים.
We can button up the buttons in a shirt, we can button up the buttons in a coat.
אֶפְשָׁר לְכַפְתֵּר אֶת הַכַּפְתּוֹרִים בַּחוּלְצָה, אֶפְשָׁר לְכַפְתֵּר אֶת הַכַּפְתּוֹרִים בַּמְּעִיל.
There are those who button up to the top of the blouse, i.e until the last one, especially if they are going to a respected event and need to wear a tie, and there are those who leave the top button open if it is a regular day without a special event.
יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁמְּכַפְתְּרִים אֶת הַחוּלְצָה עַד לְמַעְלָה, כְּלוֹמַר עַד הַכַּפְתּוֹר הָאַחֲרוֹן בִּמְיוּחָד אִם הוֹלְכִים לְאֵירוּעַ מְכוּבָּד וְצָרִיךְ לַעֲנוֹב עֲנִיבָה וְיֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁמַּשְׁאִירִים אֶת הַכַּפְתּוֹר הָעֶלְיוֹן פָּתוּחַ אִם זֶה סְתָם יוֹם רָגִיל בְּלִי אֵירוּעַ מְיוּחָד.
It is possible to understand that the infinitive 'לְכַפְתֵּר' is formed from the word button.
We have more verbs in Hebrew that are formed from a noun, for example:
Electricity – to electrify
Telephone – to telephone
Fax – to fax
אֶפְשָׁר לְהָבִין שֶׁשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לְכַפְתֵּר' נוֹצַר מֵהַמִּילָּה כַּפְתּוֹר.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ עוֹד פְּעָלִים בְּעִבְרִית שֶׁנּוֹצְרוּ מִשֵּׁם עֶצֶם, לְמָשָׁל:
חַשְׁמַל – לְחַשְׁמֵל
טֶלֶפוֹן – לְטַלְפֵּן
פַקְס – לְפַקְסֵס
Here are some sentences with the verb 'לְכַפְתֵּר' at different tenses and in different pronouns:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַפֹּעַל 'לְכַפְתֵּר' בִּזְמַנִּים שׁוֹנִים וּבְגוּפִים שׁוֹנִים:
1. He buttons up to the upper button of his white shirt, because he wants to wear a tie.
1. הוּא מְכַפְתֵּר עַד הַכַּפְתּוֹר הָעֶלְיוֹן בַּחוּלְצָה הַלְּבָנָה שֶׁלּוֹ, כִּי הוּא רוֹצֶה לַעֲנוֹב עֲנִיבָה.
2. He helped her button up her dress from behind, because she didn't reach her back.
2. הוּא עָזַר לָהּ לְכַפְתֵּר אֶת הַשִּׂמְלָה מֵאָחוֹרָה כִּי הִיא לֹא מַגִּיעָה לַגַּב.

4. I buttoned up my coat to the top button, because the wind was blowing hard and cold.
4. כִּפְתַּרְתִּי אֶת הַמְּעִיל שֶׁלִּי עַד הַכַּפְתּוֹר הָעֶלְיוֹן כִּי הָרוּחַ מַמָּשׁ חָזָקָה וְקָרָה.
