A polymath\a man of many interests

If you look at a grapevine (plant) full of fruit, you will see groups of grapes growing together. Each group is called a cluster.

אִם תִּסְתַּכְּלוּ עַל הַגֶּפֶן (הַצֶּמַח) מְלֵאָה בְּפֵירוֹת, תִּרְאוּ קְבוּצוֹת שֶׁל עֲנָבִים שֶׁגְּדֵלִים יַחַד. כָּל קְבוּצָה כָּזֹאת נִקְרֵאת אֶשְׁכּוֹל.

The expression "man of clusters" refers to a person who has great knowledge in many fields.

הַבִּיטּוּי אִישׁ אֶשְׁכּוֹלוֹת מִתְיַחֵס לְאָדָם שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ יֶדַע רַב בִּתְחוּמִים רַבִּים.

Some claim that the expression is not related to the image of clusters of grapes but to the word "schools".

יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁטּוֹעֲנִים שֶׁהַבִּיטּוּי לֹא קָשׁוּר לַדִּימּוּי שֶׁל אֶשְׁכּוֹלוֹת עֲנָבִים אֶלָּא לַמִּילָּה 'אַסְכּוֹלוֹת'.

There are various people who have earned this title, for example:

Maimonides, who had extensive knowledge of religious matters and was also a doctor. Leonardo da Vinci also earned this title because he was a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist.

יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שׁוֹנִים שֶׁזָּכוּ לַכִּינּוּי הַזֶּה, לְמָשָׁל: הָרמבּ"ם שֶׁהָיָה בַּעַל יֶדַע רָחָב בְּעִנְיְנֵי דָּת וּכְמוֹ כֵּן הָיָה רוֹפֵא. גַּם לִיאוֹנַרְדּוֹ דֶּה וִינְצִ'י זָכָה לַכִּינּוּי הַזֶּה כִּי הוּא הָיָה צַיָּר, פַּסָּל, אַדְרִיכָל, מְהַנְדֵּס וּמַדְּעָן.
