A rag - Rags

The word "cloth"(matlit in Hebrew) is similar in meaning to the word "patch"(tlai in Hebrew). A patch is a piece of fabric.

הַמִּילָּה מַטְלִית דּוֹמָה בְּמַשְׁמָעוּתָהּ לַמִּילָּה טְלַאי. טְלַאי הוּא חֲתִיכַת בַּד.

We have a floor cloth (matlit la'ritzpa) and we also have a cloth for marbleor a dusting cloth. The difference between them, of course, is in size.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ מַטְלִית לָרִצְפָּה וְיֵשׁ לָנוּ מַטְלִית לְשַׁיִשׁ אוֹ לְנִיקּוּי אָבָק מֵרָהִיטִים. הַהֶבְדֵּל בֵּינֵהֵן הוּא, כַּמּוּבָן, בַּגוֹדֶל.

In recent years, we have microfiber cloths, which are much better than the ones I remember from my childhood.

בַּשָּׁנִים הָאַחֲרוֹנוֹת יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֶת מַטְלִיּוֹת הַמִּקְרוֹפַיְבֵּר שֶׁהֵן הַרְבֵּה יוֹתֵר טוֹבוֹת מֵהַמַטְלִיּוֹת שֶׁאֲנִי זוֹכֶרֶת מִיַּלְדוּתִי.

Instead of the word "cloth" (matlit), we sometimes use the slang word "rag" (smartut in Hebrew). We also use the word "rag"(smartut) metaphorically to describe someone who is weak-willed.

For example, if someone was invited to watch a soccer match but his wife told him to stay home, his friends might say to him: "What, are you a rag?!"

בִּמְקוֹם הַמִּילָּה מַטְלִית אֲנַחְנוּ אוֹמְרִים בִּסְלֶנְגּ: סְמַרְטוּט.

וּבַמִילָה סְמַרְטוּט אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים גַּם כְּדֵי לְדַבֵּר עַל מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁהוּא חַלָּשׁ אוֹפִי.

לְמָשָׁל: אִם הִזְמִינוּ מִישֶׁהוּ לִצְפּוֹת בְּמִשְׂחַק כַּדּוּרֶגֶל אֲבָל אִשְׁתּוֹ אָמְרָה לוֹ לְהִשָּׁאֵר בַּבַּיִת אָז הַחֲבֵרִים שֶׁלּוֹ יַגִּידוּ לוֹ:"מָה, אַתָּה סְמַרְטוּט?!"

Here are some sentences using the word "cloth" (matlit) or "cloths"(matliyot):

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה מַטְלִית אוֹ מַטְלִיּוֹת:

1. After he finished cooking a lavish meal, he took a damp cloth and carefully wiped down the marble countertop.

1. לְאַחַר שֶׁהוּא סִיֵּם לְבַשֵּׁל אֲרוּחָה מְפוֹאֶרֶת, הוּא לָקַח מַטְלִית לַחָה וְנִגֵּב בִּזְהִירוּת אֶת הַשַּׁיִשׁ.

2. In honor of Passover, I decided to clean my car, so I used a special microfiber cloth to polish the windows.

2. לִכְבוֹד חַג הַפֶּסַח הֶחְלַטְתִּי לְנַקּוֹת גַּם אֶת הָאוֹטוֹ אָז הִשְׁתַּמַּשְׁתִּי בְּמַטְלִית מִיקְרוֹפַיְבֶּר מְיוּחֶדֶת כְּדֵי לְהַבְרִיק אֶת הַחַלּוֹנוֹת.

3. If it's raining and the dogs go out into the yard, when they come back inside, I must wipe the floor with a dry cloth because it's full of their muddy paw prints.

3. אִם יֵשׁ גֶּשֶׁם וְהַכְּלָבִים יוֹצְאִים לַגִּינָּה, כְּשֶׁהֵם נִכְנָסִים הַבַּיְתָה חֲזָרָה, אֲנִי חַיֶּבֶת לְנַגֵּב אֶת הָרִצְפָּה בְּמַטְלִית יְבֵשָׁה כִּי הִיא מְלֵאָה בְּעִקְבוֹת הָרַגְלַיִם שֶׁלָּהֶם.

4. After a long day working in the garage, the mechanic wiped the engine oil from his hands using a thick cloth soaked in strong cleaning agents.

4. אַחֲרֵי יוֹם אָרוֹךְ שֶׁל עֲבוֹדָה בַּמּוּסָךְ, הַמְּכוֹנַאי נִגֵּב אֶת שֶׁמֶן הַמָּנוֹעַ מִיָּדָיו בְּאֶמְצָעוּת מַטְלִית עָבָה שֶׁהָיְתָה סְפוּגָה בְּחוׄמְרֵי נִיקּוּי חֲזָקִים.
