A war lost from the beginning
Sometimes people get involved in a project or put their efforts into a certain struggle, but others with more experience or a different perspective tell them it’s a lost cause from the start.
לִפְעָמִים אֲנָשִׁים נִכְנָסִים לְאֵיזֶה פְּרוֹיֶקְט אוֹ מַשְׁקִיעִים אֶת מִרְצָם בְּאֵיזֶשֶׁהוּא מַאֲבָק, אֲבָל אֲנָשִׁים אֲחֵרִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהֶם יוֹתֵר נִסָּיוֹן אוֹ רְאִיָה אַחֶרֶת אוֹמְרִים לָהֶם שֶׁזֹּאת מִלְחָמָה אֲבוּדָה מֵרֹאשׁ.
Those who enter such a project may not see (or might choose not to see) the powerful forces (like significant financial backing or the influence of strong individuals) opposing the success of the project. Therefore, it’s considered a lost cause from the beginning.
מִי שֶׁנִּכְנַס לַפְּרוֹיֶקְט לִפְעָמִים לֹא רוֹאֶה (אוֹ לֹא רוֹצֶה לִרְאוֹת) שֶׁיֵּשׁ כּוֹחוֹת חֲזָקִים (כְּמוֹ כֶּסֶף רַב, אוֹ הַשְׁפָּעָה שֶׁל אֲנָשִׁים חֲזָקִים) שֶׁלֹּא מְעוּנְיָנִים שֶׁהַפְּרוֹיֵקְט הַזֶּה יַצְלִיחַ וְלָכֵן זֹאת מִלְחָמָה אֲבוּדָה מֵרֹאשׁ.
However, even the battle between David and Goliath initially seemed like a lost cause. Goliath was a giant and experienced warrior, while David was a young boy—and yet, David triumphed!
אֲבָל גַּם הַמִּלְחָמָה בֵּין דָּוִד לְגוׄלְיָת נִרְאֲתָה בַּהַתְחָלָה כְּמוֹ מִלְחָמָה אֲבוּדָה מֵרֹאשׁ. גוׄלְיָת הָיָה אִישׁ מִלְחָמָה עֲנָק וּמְנוּסֶּה, וְדָוִד הָיָה נַעַר צָעִיר וּבְכָל זֹאת דָּוִד נִצֵּחַ!
My advice in such matters is to carefully think whether you’re about to fight a lost cause. If you’re certain that it is, it might be better not to engage. At the same time, don’t let these thoughts discourage you from trying new things altogether.
הָעֵצָה שֶׁלִּי בָּעִנְיָן הַזֶּה הִיא לַחֲשׁוֹב טוֹב הַאִם אַתֶּם הוֹלְכִים לְהִלָּחֵם מִלְחָמָה אֲבוּדָה מֵרֹאשׁ? אִם אַתֶּם בְּטוּחִים שֶׁכֵּן, אַל תִּכָּנְסוּ לָזֶה. יַחַד עִם זֶה אַל תִּתְּנוּ לַמַּחְשָׁבוֹת הָאֵלֶּה לְהַפְחִיד אֶתְכֶם לְנַסּוֹת דְּבָרִים חֲדָשִׁים.
