We know that if we want to discover the root of a tree or a plant or even a vegetable we must dig in the ground.
This is exactly how we use this expression when we want to find the cause or background of a certain issue.
We "dig" in the literal sense, that is, we ask questions, investigate the matter and hope to get to its root.

אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים שֶׁאִם אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְגַלּוֹת אֶת הַשּׁוֹרֶשׁ שֶׁל עֵץ אוֹ צֶמַח אוֹ אֲפִילּוּ יָרָק אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לַחֲפוֹר בָּאֲדָמָה.
כָּךְ בְּדִיּוּק אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לִמְצוֹא אֶת הַסִּיבָּה אוֹ אֶת הָרֶקַע שֶׁל נוֹשֵׂא מְסוּיָּם.
אֲנַחְנוּ "חוֹפְרִים" בַּמּוּבָן הַמִּילּוּלִי, כְּלוֹמַר שׁוֹאֲלִים שְׁאֵלוֹת, חוֹקְרִים אֶת הָעִנְיָן וּמְקַוִּים לְהַגִּיעַ לְשׁוֹרְשׁוֹ.
We know that getting to the root of a tree is more difficult than getting to the root of a flower, so it can also be a complicated matter that we will need more time and/or effort to get to its root.
