Jerusalem walls
The Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by walls. These walls were built to protect the city from enemies, and indeed, every time the city was conquered, its walls were destroyed and rebuilt by the new rulers.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הָעַתִּיקָה מוּקֶּפֶת חוֹמוֹת.
הַחוֹמוֹת נִבְנוּ כְּדֵי לְהָגֵן עַל הָעִיר מִפְּנֵי אוֹיְבִים וּבֶאֱמֶת בְּכָל פַּעַם שֶׁהָעִיר נִכְבְּשָׁה הַחוֹמוֹת שֶׁלָּהּ נֶהֶרְסוּ וְהַכּוֹבְשִׁים בָּנוּ אוֹתָן שׁוּב.
The first wall was constructed during the Canaanite period over 4,000 years ago, when the Canaanite city was called Jebus.
הַחוֹמָה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה נִבְנְתָה בִּימֵי הַכְּנַעֲנִים לִפְנֵי יוֹתֵר מִ- 4000 שָׁנָה כְּשֶׁהָעִיר הַכְּנַעֲנִית נִקְרְאָה יְבוּס.
King David conquered Jerusalem and made it the capital of Israel, and his son Solomon expanded the city and its walls.
דָּוִד הַמֶּלֶךְ כָּבַשׁ אֶת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וְהָפַךְ אוֹתָהּ לְבִירַת יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבְנוֹ שְׁלֹמֹה הִרְחִיב אֶת הָעִיר וְגַם אֶת הַחוֹמוֹת.
The last wall was erected in the 16th century by Sultan Suleiman, the ruler of the Ottoman Empire.
