In the infinitive form of this verb, we can see the root ח.פ.ש. If we put this root in the Piel (פִּעֵל), we get the infinitive form לחפש, which means "to look for." However, if we put this root in Hitpa'el (הִתְפַּעֵל), we get the infinitive form להתחפש, which means "to dress up in someone else's clothes."
בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל הַזֶּה אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לִרְאוֹת אֶת הַשּׁוֹרֶשׁ ח.פ.ש.

In Purim, we traditionally dress up and wear different clothes to (as if) become someone else.
בְּפוּרִים אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לְהִתְחַפֵּשׂ וְלִלְבּוֹשׁ בְּגָדִים אֲחֵרִים כְּדֵי לִהְיוֹת (כְּאִילּוּ) מִישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר.

הַבְּגָדִים הָאֵלֶּה, שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ לוֹבְשִׁים, נִקְרָאִים תַּחְפּוֹשֶׂת. זֶה מֵאוֹתוֹ שׁוֹרֶשׁ. הַמִּילָּה תַּחְפּוֹשֶׂת מוֹפִיעָה בְּסַל הַמִּילִּים שֶׁל פּוּרִים, וְאִם אַתֶּם רוֹצִים לִלְמוֹד עָלֶיהָ לַחֲצוּ כָּאן.
When I was a student in school, during Purim, the girls loved dressing up as princesses or queens, and the boys as warriors like Ninja and Superman.
כְּשֶׁהָיִיתִי תַּלְמִידָה בְּבֵית הַסֵּפֶר, בּ ְפוּרִים, הַבָּנוֹת אָהֲבוּ לְהִתְחַפֵּשׂ לִנְסִיכוֹת אוֹ מַלְכּוֹת, וְהַבָּנִים לְלוֹחֲמִים כְּמוֹ: נִינְגָ'ה וְסוּפֶּר מֵן.
