Send your bread on the face of the water
This phrase is commonly shortened to just "Send your bread" but the full verse is: "Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it."
אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לְקַצֵּר אֶת הַבִּיטּוּי וּלְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ רַק בִּשְׁתֵּי מִילִּים מִמֶּנּוֺ: "שְׁלַח לַחְמֶךָ" אֲבָל הַפָּסוּק הַמָּלֵא הוּא: "שַׁלַּח לַחְמְךָ עַל-פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם, כִּי בְרֹב הַיָּמִים תִּמְצָאֶנּוּ".
The origin of this expression is in the Book of Ecclesiastes, meaning it is one of the words of wisdom written by King Solomon. This verse aims to convey the message that as we behave in the world, so the world will behave towards us.
מְקוֹרוֹ שֶׁל הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּסֵפֶר קֹהֶלֶת כְּלוֹמַר זֶהוּ אֶחָד מִדִּבְרֵי הַחָכְמָה שֶׁשְּׁלֹמֹה הַמֶּלֶךְ כָּתַב. הַפָּסוּק הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לְהַעֲבִיר לָנוּ אֶת הַמֶּסֶר שֶׁכְּפִי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ נִתְנַהֵג בָּעוֹלָם, כָּךְ הָעוֹלָם יִתְנַהֵג אֵלֵינוּ.
Some people use this expression in the context of bribery, meaning: I will do a favor for someone who has authority with the expectation that in the future they will use their authority to return the favor to me.
יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁמִּשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּמוּבָן שֶׁל שׁוֹחַד, כְּלוֹמַר: אֲנִי אֶעֱשֶׂה טוֹבָה לְמִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ סַמְכוּת בְּצִפִּיָּה שֶׁבֶּעָתִיד הוּא יְנַצֵּל אֶת סַמְכוּתוֹ כְּדֵי לְהַחֲזִיר לִי טוֹבָה.
However, we also use this expression to encourage people to take action. For example, if someone is looking for a job, we recommend: "Send your bread," meaning send many messages to many places, perhaps one of them will suit you.
אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ גַּם מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כְּדֵי לְעוֹדֵד אֲנָשִׁים לַעֲשִׂיָּה, לְמָשָׁל: אִם מִישֶׁהוּ מְחַפֵּשׂ עֲבוֹדָה אֲנַחְנוּ מַמְלִיצִים לוֹ: "שְׁלַח לַחְמֶךָ", כְּלוֹמַר שְׁלַח הַרְבֵּה הוֹדָעוֹת לְהַרְבֵּה מְקוֹמוֹת, אוּלַי אֶחָד מֵהֶם יַתְאִים לָךְ.
