בְּזֵעַת אַפֶּיךָ תֹּאכַל לֶחֶם
BE-ZEA’T APECHA TOCHAL LECHEM
By the sweat of your nose, you shall eat bread
This expression is the curse that the first man received due to the sin of eating from the Tree of Knowledge.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה הוּא הַקְּלָלָה שֶׁנִּתְקַלֵּל הָאָדָם הָרִאשׁוֹן בְּשֶׁל חֵטְא הָאֲכִילָה מֵעֵץ הַדַּעַת.
Why is it a curse? The first man, who lived in the Garden of Eden after his creation, could eat fruits from all the trees in the Garden of Eden without any special effort, simply picking and eating.
לָמָּה זֹאת קְלָלָה?
הָאָדָם הָרִאשׁוֹן שֶׁחַי בְּגַן עֵדֶן לְאַחַר בְּרִיאָתוֹ יָכוֹל הָיָה לֶאֱכוֹל פֵּרוֹת מִכָּל עֲצֵי גַּן הָעֵדֶן בְּלִי מַאֲמָץ מְיוּחָד, פָּשׁוּט לִקְטוֹף וְלֶאֱכוֹל.
After man was expelled from the Garden of Eden, it would no longer be so easy, and he would have to work the land hard to have bread to eat.
לְאַחַר שֶׁאָדָם גֹּרַשׁ מִגַּן עֵדֶן, כְּבָר לֹא יִהְיֶה לוֹ כָּל כָּךְ קַל וְהוּא יִצְטָרֵךְ לַעֲבוֹד אֶת הָאֲדָמָה קָשֶׁה כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לוֹ לֶחֶם לֶאֱכוֹל.
We still use this expression today when we want to tell someone: If you want to succeed, you must work hard.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים גַּם הַיּוֹם בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַגִּיד לְמִישֶׁהוּ: אִם אַתָּה רוֹצֶה לְהַצְלִיחַ עָלֶיךָ לַעֲבוֹד קָשֶׁה.
