Rose of winds
The "Rose of the Winds" is the name of the diagram that describes the directions: north, south, east, and west.
שׁוֹשַׁנַּת הָרוּחוֹת הִיא הַשֵּׁם שֶׁל הַצִּיּוּר הַמְּתָאֵר אֶת הַכִּיוּוּנִים: צָפוֹן, דָּרוֹ ם, מִזְרָח, מַעֲרָב.
These four directions are called the "רוּחוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם" and the diagram, which depicts them, resembles a flower. Therefore, it is called the "Rose of the Winds."
אַרְבַּעַת הַכִּיוּוּנִים הָאֵלֶּה נִקְרָאִים רוּחוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהַצִּיּוּר הַזֶּה שֶׁהֵם מְצוּיָּרִים עָלָיו מַזְכִּיר לָנוּ פֶּרַח וְלָכֵן הוּא נִקְרָא שׁוֹשַׁנַּת הָרוּחוֹת.
In fact, the "Rose of the Winds" includes more than four directions. There are wind roses that also indicate: northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest.
לְמַעֲשֶׂה לְשׁוֹשַׁנַּת הָרוּחוֹת יֵשׁ יוֹתֵר מֵאַרְבָּעָה כִּיוּוּנִים. יֵשׁ שׁוֹשַׁנּוֹת רוּחַ שֶׁעֲלֵיהֶן מְצַיְּנִים גַּם: צְפוֹן – מִזְרָח, צְפוֹן -מַעֲרָב, דְּרוֹם מִזְרָח וּדְרוֹם מַעֲרָב.
The 16-direction Rose of the Winds was invented by a scientist who worked for the king of Egypt as early as the 3rd century BCE and was used by sailors navigating ships.
שׁוֹשַׁנַּת הָרוּחוֹת בַּעֲלַת 16 כִּיוּוּנִים הוּמְצְאָה עַל יְדֵי מַדְּעָן שֶׁעָבַד אֵצֶל מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם כְּבָר בַּמֵּאָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁית לִפְנֵי הַסְּפִירָה וְהָיְתָה בְּשִׁימּוּשׁ אֵצֶל סַפָּנִים שֶׁהִפְלִיגוּ בַּסְּפִינוֹת.
